Concerning Chicano and Hispanic history in theatre more specifically, Zoot Suit aligns within the early 20th century period of Mexican-American theatre particularly, that focused on a morals and ethics. Much of the history of Hispanic theatre involves the ethics and lifestyle of hispanic individuals embedded in the culture, and Zoot Suit is no exception. Moreover, Mexican-American theatre really became to come into its own and develop an identity estranged from that of Anglo Saxon White America, as the pressure that many hispanics were under concerned assimilation into White America. Zoot Suit addresses this almost directly. The essence of the story revolves around the Mexican-Americans struggle with expressing their identity without the intimidation of their white peers to "adapt" to "American" culture.
